A network is a collection of computers. For example, the internet is a network, which consists of millions of interconnected computers. Each of these computers has a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address. An Ip address is the address of the computer on the network. It identifies each computer as a distinct machine connected to the network. It consists of a series of four numbers, seperated by periods such as 251.145.14.98. Computers communicate each other by using their IP addresses.
Your access site or locations on the network by entering their names in the browser. For example it is easier to remeber a website as www.google.com , than to memorize its Ip address., 64.233.189.104 computers do not understand these names. The names you are entered converted into IP addresses, so that the site can be accessed. Name resolution is the process of mapping computer names to their assosciated IP addresses.
There are Two ways to resolve names :
1) Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS )
2) Domain Name system (DNS)
Windows 2003 supports both of them. However DNS is Preferred.
